The CAHPS Hospital Survey (H-CAHPS) is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients’ perspectives of hospital care. It is a standardized questionnaire with optional supplemental items, developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

The purpose of the survey is to produce comparable data for objective comparison, create incentives for hospitals to improve quality of care, and to hold hospital’s accountable for the care they deliver.

Yes, H-CAHPS is currently tied to Medicare reimbursement and if you do not participate, a portion of your Medicare reimbursement will be withheld.
How is the data submitted to CMS and accessed by patients?
All scores and results have been publicly reported since 2008 on Hospital Compare, where patients can easily compare your hospital side-by-side with local competition or view your hospital’s results individually. Your vendor should handle all aspects of reporting for you and deliver your results to CMS on your behalf.
